From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀲𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀇 (sakkaï), from Sanskrit शक्नोति (śaknóti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *śaknáwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćaknáwti, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱₔk-néw-ti, from the root *ḱek- (to be able). Cognate with Marathi शकणे (śakṇe), Hindi सकना (saknā).
