Etymology[edit]
Sanskritic formation from सती (satī) + -च्- (-c-) + छद (chad, “covering”). Incorrectly formed term, since सती f (satī) means “female saint” or “faithful wife” not “virgin”; compare कुमारीच्छद (kumārīcchad, literally “virgin-covering”), कौमार्य झिल्ली (kaumārya jhillī, literally “virginity-membrane”). योनिच्छद (yonicchad, literally “vagina-covering”) is scientifically the most accurate term.
