Etymology 1[edit]

Borrowed from Sanskrit अकाम (akāma). Structurally, from Sanskritic bahuvrīhi compound of অ- (o-) +‎ কাম (kam), or, by Bengali prefixation অ- (o-) +‎ কাম (kam).

Etymology 2[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit अकर्म (akarma), which enters into Prakrit as অকাম, and remains unchanged in Bengali or turns into আকাম (akam). Alternatively, it is formed by Bengali prefixation অ- (o-) +‎ কাম (kam, work). Doublet of অকর্ম (ôkôrmô).
