Inherited from Sanskrit অঙ্কযতি (aṅkayati, to move along a curve; mark), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hankáyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enk-éye-ti (to cause to curve). Cognate with Assamese আঁক (ãk), Sylheti ꠀꠇꠣ (axa), Hindustani آن٘کْنَا (ā̃knā) / आँकना (ā̃knā), Marathi आखणे (ākhṇe), Gujarati આંકવું (ā̃kavũ).
