Inherited from Sanskrit আৰ্যক (āryaka, “respectable man, grandfather”). Cognate with Bengali আজি (aji, “grandmother”), Odia ଅଜା (ôja, “mother's father”), Bhojpuri 𑂄𑂔𑂰 (ājā, “grandfather”), 𑂄𑂔𑂲 (ājī, “grandmother”), Pali ayyaka (“grandfather”).
