Inherited from Sanskrit আৰ্যক (āryaka, respectable man, grandfather). Cognate with Bengali আজি (aji, grandmother), Odia ଅଜା (ôja, mother's father), Bhojpuri 𑂄𑂔𑂰 (ājā, grandfather), 𑂄𑂔𑂲 (ājī, grandmother), Pali ayyaka (grandfather).
