Inherited from Prakrit *𑀅𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀸𑀟𑀻 (*aṇṇāḍī), dissimilated from 𑀅𑀡𑁆𑀡𑀸𑀡𑀻 (aṇṇāṇī), from Sanskrit अज्ञानी (ajñānī, “ignorant, unwise”), compounded from अ- (a-, “not”) +‎ ज्ञानी (jñānī, “knowledgeable, wise”), itself from ज्ञान (jñāna, “knowledge”) +‎ -ई (-ī, “possessing”). Cognate with Assamese অনাৰী (onari), Odia ଅନାଡ଼ି (ônaṛi), Maithili 𑂃𑂢𑂰𑂚𑂲 (anāṛī), Hindi अनाड़ी (anāṛī), Vaghri અનાડ઼ી (anāṛī), Gujarati અનાડી (anāḍī), Sindhi اَناڙي /अनाड़ी (anāṛī), Marwari अनाड़ी (anāṛī), Punjabi ਅਨਾੜੀ (anāṛī), Nepali अनाडी (anāḍī), Marathi अडाणी (aḍāṇī).
