Etymology

Inherited from Early Assamese উশাস (uśaso), from Sanskrit *উৎশ্ৱাস (utśvāsa), from Sanskrit শ্বাস (śvāsá), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ḱʷes- (“to pant, puff, sigh”). Cognate with Sylheti ꠃꠀ (ua), Odia ଉସାସ (usasô, “relief from disease, ease”), Marathi उसासा (usāsā, “sigh, suspiration”), Hindi उसांस (usāns), उसाँस (usā̃s).
