Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit चट्टोपाध्याय (caṭṭopādhyāya), from चट्ट (caṭṭa) +‎ उपाध्याय (upādhyāya, teacher), literally teacher from the village of Chatta (in northern India). Doublet of চাটুজ্জে (caṭujje) and চ্যাটার্জী (cêṭarji).
