Etymology[edit]
Probably vowel-harmonized from Middle Bengali *চারুলিয়া (*caruliẏa), from an earlier *চারৌলিয়া (*carōuliẏa), a compound of চার (car, “four”) + ঔলিয়া (ōuliẏa, “saints”), such named due to the reverence of four medieval saints in the region.[1]
