Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀦𑁆𑀦𑀸 (chānnā​), from Prakrit 𑀙𑀸𑀯𑀦𑁆𑀦𑀸 (chāvannā), from 𑀙𑀸𑀯 (chāva) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀦𑁆𑀦- (-nna-), from Sanskrit *छाप (chāpa, young one). Doublet of ছা (cha) and ছাওয়াল (chaōẇal). Cognate with Assamese ছনা (sona), ছানা (sana) and Sylheti ꠍꠣꠘꠣ (sána).

Cognate with Hindi छेना (chenā) and, distantly, English stone.
