Etymology[edit]
Semi-learned borrowing from Sanskrit পক্ষিন্ (pakṣín, “bird”, literally “winged”). Compare Punjabi ਪੰਖੀ (paṅkhī), Old Hindi पंषी (paṃkhī). Doublet of পক্ষী (pokkhi), a tatsama, and পাখি (pakhi), a tadbhava.
