An unaspirated form of পুখুর (pukhur), i-dropped form of পুখুরি (pukhuri), from Middle Bengali পুখরী (pukhori), from Old Bengali পোখিরী (pokhirī), from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀧𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀔𑀭 (pokkhara, lotus pond) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇- (-i-), from Sanskrit पौष्कर (pauṣkara), vriddhi of पुष्कर (puṣkara, blue lotus), from the root पुष् (puṣ, to thrive). Cognate with Sylheti ꠙꠥꠈ꠆ꠞꠤ (fuḱri), ꠙꠥꠈꠂꠞ (fukóir), Chittagonian ফইর (foir), Assamese পুখুৰী (pukhuri), Maithili 𑒣𑒼𑒐𑒩𑒲 (pōkharī) / पोखरी (pokhair), Odia ପୋଖରୀ (pokhôri). Doublet of পুষ্প (puśpo), পুষ্ট (puśṭo), পুষ্টি (puśṭi), and পৌষ (pōuś).
