Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian بچه (bačča), which is from Middle Persian wck' (wačag, child, baby, cub), from Proto-Iranian *wacáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *watsás (yearling calf), whence also came Sanskrit वत्स (vatsa), whence the doublets বৎস (botśo) and বাছা (bacha), both of which have similarly changed the meaning to "child".
