Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀯𑁂𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀇 (veccaï, spends), from Sanskrit वेत्ययति (vetyayati, makes a price), denominalized from वेत्या (vetyā, hire, price), most probably from the root वी (, to chase, pursue), with semantic shift to mean striving to gain money or goods (by selling). Doublet of বেতন (beton, salary, pay, wage).
