Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian مهدی (mahdī), from Arabic مَهْدِيّ (mahdiyy, literally “rightly-guided, rational”). The intial e-vowel forms may be via an intermediate Hindustani مهدی / महदी (mahdī), which often vocalizes the cluster ah as êh.
