Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Classical Persian شرمندگی, a compound of شرمنده (“ashamed”) (which is taken from Classical Persian شرم, which is ultimately from Middle Persian 𐭱𐭥𐭬 (šarm), from Avestan 𐬟𐬱𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬨𐬀 (fšarəma), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱormo- (“suffering, pain”). Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (kṣär-, “be ashamed”) and English harm) and the suffix گی (gē).
