Inherited from Old Bengali *সাঁঅতাল (sā̃atāla), from Magadhi Prakrit *𑀲𑀸𑀅𑀁𑀢𑀸𑀮 (*sāaṃtāla), from earlier Prakrit *𑀲𑀸𑀫𑀁𑀢𑀯𑀸𑀮 (*sāmaṃtavāla), from Sanskrit सामन्तपाल (sāmantapāla, border-tribe), from सामन्त (sāmanta, bordering; neighbour) +‎ पाल (pāla, protector, keeper); the first element is from समन्त (samanta, adjoining, bordering), from सम्- (sam-, along with) +‎ अन्त (anta, border, boundary).
