Borrowed from Classical Persian صندوق (sandūq), from Arabic صَنْدُوق (ṣandūq), from Aramaic צנדוק (ṣəndūq), ultimately from Ancient Greek σῠνθήκη (sunthḗkē). Cognate with Assamese চন্দুক (sonduk), Hindustani صندوق / संदूक़ (sandūq), Punjabi ਸੰਦੂਕ (sandūk), Kannada ಸಂದೂಕ (sandūka).
