Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish سركه (sirke, vinegar), from Proto-Turkic *sirke (vinegar).[1] Compare Chuvash шарак (šarak, bitter; salt). Akin to Persian سرکه (serke); according to Doerfer the direction of a possible borrowing is not clear.[2]
