Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit स्निग्धा (snigdhā), the feminine form of स्निग्ध (snigdha, loving, affectionate), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *snigdʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *snigʷʰ-tós, from *sneygʷʰ- (to snow), with extensive semantic shift. Doublet of স্নিগ্ধ (snigdho) and স্নেহ (sneho) (see there for explanations for the shift).
