Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Classical Persian حکم (hukm), from Arabic حُكْم (ḥukm). Cognate with Hindi हुक्म (hukm), Gujarati હુકમ (hukam), Marathi हुकूम (hukūm), Punjabi ਹੁਕਮ (hukam), Kannada ಹುಕುಮು (hukumu).
