Probably from Sanskrit ৰাজ্য (rājya, “country, state”), from the root ৰাজ্ (rāj, “king, sovereign, chief”), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hrā́ṭṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrā́ćš, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗḱs (“king”).
