Probably from Sanskrit ৰাজ্য (rājya, country, state), from the root ৰাজ্ (rāj, king, sovereign, chief), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hrā́ṭṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hrā́ćš, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rḗḱs (king).
