Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Gujarati कालउं (kālaüṃ), from Prakrit 𑀓𑀸𑀮𑀬 (kālaya), from Sanskrit કાલક (kālaka) (compare કાલ (kāla, black, dark or dark-blue)). Cognate with Konkani काळें (kāḷẽ), Marathi काळे (kāḷe), Marwari काळो (kāḷo).
