Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀘𑀯𑁆𑀯𑀤𑀺 (*cavvadi), from Sanskrit चर्वति (cárvati). Cognate with Hindi चबाना (cabānā) and Marathi चावणे (ċāvṇe).
