Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑀺𑀳𑀤𑀺 (lihadi), from Sanskrit लिखति (likháti), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *rikʰ-á-ti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *rikʰ-á-ti, from Proto-Indo-European *rikh₂-é-ti, from *reyk(ʷ)h₂- (“to scratch”). Doublet of રેખા (rekhā, “line, streak”). Cognate with Assamese লিখা (likha), Bengali লেখা (lekha), Dhivehi ލިޔަނީ (liyanī), Hindustani لکھنا / लिखना (likhnā), Marathi लिहिणे (lihiṇe), Punjabi لکھنا / ਲਿਖਣਾ (likhṇā), and Sinhalese ලියනවා (liyanawā).
