Borrowed from Classical Persian شام (šām) from Proto-Iranian *xšáfnyah. Cognate with Sanskrit क्षप् (kṣap, “night”); despite phonetic and semantic similarity, unrelated to Sanskrit श्यामा (śyāmā, “night, shadow”), which derives from a different root.
