From Middle Telugu వాఁడు (vāṅḍu), from Old Telugu వాండు (vāṇḍu), వాన్ౚు (vānṟ̄u), ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *awanṯu, cognate with Tamil அவன் (avaṉ), Malayalam അവൻ (avaṉ), Kannada ಅವನು (avanu).
