Inherited from Proto-South Dravidian *kōẓi. Cognate with Malayalam കോഴി (kōḻi), Kannada ಕೋಳಿ (kōḷi), Kodava ಕೋಳಿ (kōḷi), Gondi గొగ్డి (gogḍi), Tamil கோழி (kōḻi), Telugu కోడి (kōḍi) and Tulu ಕೋಳಿ (kōḷi).
