Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܡܬܝ (mattāy), from Aramaic מתי (matay), from Hebrew מתתיהו (mattiṯyāhū), contraction of מַתָּנַת (matanát, “gift of”) + יהוה (YHVH, “God”); literally “Gift of God”. Doublet of മാത്യു (mātyu) and മാത്തു (māttu).
