From Proto-Tai *takᴰ (“to scoop”). Cognate with Lao ຕັກ (tak), Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨠ, Lü ᦎᧅ (ṫak), Shan တၵ်း (ták), Zhuang daek, Bouyei dagt.
