From Proto-Tai *wɯːlᴬ (hard firewood). Cognate with Lao ຟືນ (fư̄n), ᦝᦹᧃ (fuen), Shan ၽိုၼ်း (phúen) or ၾိုၼ်း (fúen), Phake ၸုꩫ် (phun), Ahom 𑜇𑜤𑜃𑜫 (phun), Zhuang fwnz, Zuojiang Zhuang fwnz. Compare Proto-Be *vəːnᴬ².
