From มห (má-hà-, great) +‎ อัจฉริยะ (àt-chà-rí-yá, wonder; miracle; marvel; astonishment); ultimately from Sanskrit महाश्चर्य (mahāścarya), from मह (maha) + आश्चर्य (āścarya). Cognate with Old Khmer mahāścaryya (great wonder or marvel).
