From Pali vinaya (modesty; humility; etc), from Sanskrit विनय (vinaya, idem); possibly via Old Khmer vinaya, vinai (discipline; training; etc). Cognate with Old Khmer binai (fine; penalty; etc), from which Thai พินัย (pí-nai) is derived. Also cognate with Lao ວິໄນ (wi nai), Northern Thai ᩅᩥᨶᩢ᩠ᨿ, Khün ᩅᩥᨶᩱ᩠ᨿ, ᦞᦲᧉᦺᦓ (vii²nay), Shan ဝီႉၼႄး (wḭ̂i náae), Modern Khmer វិន័យ (pinɨy), Burmese ဝိနည်း (wi.nany:).
