From Sanskrit शील (śīla, morality). Cognate with Lao ສິນ (sin), Northern Thai ᩈᩦ᩠ᩃ, ᦉᦲᧃ (ṡiin), Shan သီႇလႃႉ (sìi lâ̰a), သိၼ် (sǐn).
