From Pali andhakāra (darkness, literally one who makes blind; one who causes blindness), from andha (blind) + kāra (doer; maker), equivalent to Thai อนธ +‎ การ (gaan). Cognate with Modern Khmer អន្ធការ (ʼɑɑnthɔɔkaa).
