From Proto-Tai *p.reːkᴰ (to burst). Compare Old Chinese (OC *proːwɢs, *poːwɢ, *proːwɢ, “to burst”). Cognate with Lao ແຕກ (tǣk), ᦶᦎᧅ (ṫaek), Shan တႅၵ်ႇ (tèk), Ahom 𑜄𑜢𑜀𑜫 (tik).
