Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tai *crwajᴬ (plough). Cognate with Lao ໄຖ (thai), Northern Thai ᨳᩱ, Khün ᨳᩱ, ᦺᦏ (ṫhay), Shan ထႆ (thǎi), Ahom 𑜌𑜩 (thay), Zhuang cae, Saek ไถ่. Shared lexeme across several languages in mainland Southeast Asia, including Mon ထေဲာ, Burmese ထယ် (htai).[1]
