Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *zrjaŋ ~ rjaŋ (uncle, superior). cf. Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-tjaŋ (upper part, rise, raise, top, summit)). Cognate with (OC *djaŋ, *djaŋs) "upwards" and Chinese (zhàng, gentleman; husband).
