From Proto-Tai *tacᴰ (to cut). Cognate with Thai ตัด (dtàt), Northern Thai ᨲᩢ᩠ᨯ, Lao ຕັດ (tat), ᦶᦎᧆ (ṫaed), Tai Dam ꪔꪰꪒ, Ahom 𑜄𑜄𑜫 (tat), Zhuang daet.
