Etymology[edit]

Perhaps from Pali pañcaṅga (consisting of five things), in the sense that a fully ordained monk:

  • Is one who has abandoned the five factors (Pali pañcaṅgavippahīna) of: lust, ill will, stiffness and torpor, agitation and worry, and uncertainty, and
  • Is one who is complete in the five factors (Pali pañcaṅgasamannāgata) of: the aggregate of virtue, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and knowledge/vision of one beyond training.
