From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ris ~ *riəs ~ *rəs ~ *rʔiəs (“root”). Cognate with Nyah Kur ริฮ่, Khmer ឫស (rɨh), Vietnamese rễ, Khasi tynrai.[3]
