Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Georgian-Zan *ga(n)- (preverb of direction "outside, outwards"). Cognate with Georgian გა- (ga-) and Mingrelian გო- (go-).

Preverb[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

  • It becomes გვ- (gv-) before (a) in Atina, Vizha, Artasheni and Chkhala dialects and sometimes in Batumi dialect.
  • It becomes გ- (g-) before vowels (except for (i)) in Vitse-Arkabi and Khopa dialects.
  • It stays გო- (go-) before (i) in Atina, Vizha, Artasheni, Vitse-Arkabi and Khopa dialects, becomes გუ- (gu-) in Chkhala and Batumi dialects.
  • It becomes გვ- (gv-) before (o) in Vizha, Artasheni and Chkhala dialects.
  • It becomes გუ- (gu-) before ვა (va), ვო (vo), მა (ma), გა (ga), მო (mo) and გო (go) but It stays გო- (go-) before ვი (vi), ვუ (vu), მი (mi) and გი (gi) in Batumi Dialect.
