Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Mon-Khmer *rit ~ *riit (“to tighten, to constrict”). Doublet of រីត (riit, “to flatten, to straighten”), រឺត (rɨɨt, “to squeeze, to milk, to massage”). Compare Thai รีด (rîit, “to squeeze, to milk; to press, to iron”).
