Yoruba[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology 1[edit]

Cognate with Igala ẹ̀dọ̀ (torso, chest, heart), proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ̀-dɔ̀ (chest, heart). The form semantically shifted from heart/chest to liver in Yoruba, but maintains the chest meaning in some dialects like Ekiti. However, compounds like ẹ̀dọ̀fùfù (impulsiveness, irritability), still show remnants of that original meaning
