Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ́-kʊ̃̀, equivalent to ẹ- (agent prefix) +‎ kùn (to growl, grumble), literally That which growls. Cognate with Igala ẹ́kọ̀, Igbo agụ
