Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Wackernagel (1902) connects it with βέλτερος, assuming that an original meaning ‘morally good’ developed into ‘too good, simple’, with an unclear prefix ἀ-. Beekes finds this unlikely. Osthoff (1910) and Hatzidakis (1921) offer different analyses.
