Etymology[edit]

Neumann points to the fact that many words connected with irrigation don't look of Indo-European origin and, beside this word, he mentions ἄρδω (árdō, to irrigate) and γόργῡρα (górgūra, underground drain). Furnée thinks that the suffix "-ηρον" is Pre-Greek.
