ἔπαυε • (épaue)

1. third-person singular imperfect active indicative of παύω (paúō)
   Example: He/She/It was stopping.

Usage notes

• The imperfect can have a repeated aspect, so alternate translations such as "He/She/It stopped (repeatedly)" are valid.
• Add a past indicative augment to the beginning of the first principal part to indicate the past timing of the imperfect tense.
• The past indicative augment is usually an epsilon with no rough breathing mark ([1]) or in the case that there is already a vowel at the beginning of the first principle part, that vowel is lengthened according to the following paradigm.

• ε lengthens to η
• α lengthens to η
• ι lengthens to ῑ
• ο lengthens to ω
• υ lengthens to ῡ

• So the augmented first principle part of παύω is επαύ- and the augmented first principle part of ἄρχω is ἤρχ-
