Etymology[edit]

Without a convincing etymology. Not related to Sanskrit आली (ālī, stripe, line). According to Beekes, clearly of Pre-Greek origin, in view of the nasalized suffix. The connection with αὖλαξ (aûlax, furrow) is certainly wrong.
