Ancient Greek[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Clear morphological cognates lacking outside Greek. The traditional comparison with Sanskrit वृश्चति (vṛścati, to hew, cleave) is not accepted by Beekes. A connection with Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥ćšás (tree) is highly uncertain. The word could well be Pre-Greek.
